Sari Sutera Designs supplies hand-woven silk from Yogyakarta and Pekalongan  on a wholesale basis. The main focus of the business is the production of hand-batiked sarongs, shawls and stoles from this hand-woven silk.  Most of our silk is hand woven from Makassar, with a smaller collection of hand woven silk from West Java.

The batik process is done in various parts of central Java, mainly drawing from the Pekalongan style. The Batik process is performed in the traditional method, employing techniques handed down from batik craftsman over the years. Our silk fabric is hand-woven either by the body-tension loom or by the shaft-loom. It comes in different textures, some are woven in a jacquard pattern, some similar to raw silk, and we also carry organza silk which is woven from untwisted silk yarn.

 

Sari Sutera Designs is a descendant of this traditional batik silk industry and a contemporary expression of a traditional craft. We have taken this silk batik industry further by hand batiking with more non-traditional and contemporary colours. We also often hand-bead the finished shawls and scarves so as to provide a variety of choices to our customers.

More recently we have diversified our collection to include bed runners, table runners and napkin sets, coasters, purses and bags, and also slippers. This range evolved from requests that we have received to supply corporate gifts. These products have been made from a combination of silk and cotton batik and recently we have also used old batik.
